After art school I went into the commercial art business for a few years and ended up at an advertising agency as a staff illustrator. My boss required me to work much faster than I do, and this was a source of tension in the office. While still there, I got this commission on the side ("We need a logo for our body ornaments business that looks like a Mucha poster!") which I worked on after hours at my desk. My boss shared some his considerable wisdom with me: "If you can't do work of this quality 3 or 4 times faster, you'll never make any money in the art biz; you just never get that kind of time before deadline." He was (and is) right, of course, and I left the agency shortly thereafter... |
